Welcome to our allotment diary. At the outset of our second year on the plot (the first full one – the plot became ours in mid June 2006) and having got a bit carried away with the seed catalogue, we thought it might be useful to keep a record of what we plant and how we do it.
More about the plot itself in another post.
Most of today’s work was digging up couch grass and preparing a new bed. On the way to the allotment we rescued a rusty wheelbarrow that had been languishing for months on a nearby patch of waste ground.
Apart from the rust, a few dents and a flat tyre, the wheelbarrow seems fine. The same cannot be said for the shed, which is neither weather-proof nor, it seems, mouse-proof. Our second act of rescue was bringing home the seed potatoes after chucking the half-nibbled ones in the compost.
We dug and prepared a long narrow bed between the two cherry trees for our onion sets and garlic, planting all of the garlic and about a third of the onion sets.
Then we picked a giant radish about the size of a beetroot.
It was a satisfying morning’s work.
